Impeachment is a formal process in which an official is accused of unlawful activity, the outcome of which, depending on the country, may include the removal of that official from office as well as criminal or civil punishment. Andrew Johnson was put into office after Lincoln’s assassination. President Johnson was born in the North but was a Southern man at heart. He believed in slavery and sympathized towards the Confederates. Andrew Johnson vetoed everything that went against his views, not stopping to consider others in power. This repeated action caused Congress to put Johnson on trial. If he was found guilty, he would be removed from office. This was the first time that this had ever occurred. However, their trial failed and Johnson kept office for the next few years. Johnson had always supported the South, believing the U.S. to be a white man’s country. After Lincoln’s Assassination, he saw this as the perfect opportunity to carry out with this. He vetoed everything (bills, laws, etc.) that would negatively affect the South and/or was designed to do so. He wanted to keep the country to his ideals, and that meant that people of color could not have any power in his mind. So, suffrage for these people wasn’t granted during this term. After, this was like a wakeup call of sorts. There were still people who supported the Confederate ideal, and didn’t want thing to change. Not everyone was going to be on the same page. This also was sort of like a warning to future presidents saying that they can’t veto everything and go against what they believe to be right.
